Critical Skills Occupations List Ireland 2026
The short answer: the Critical Skills Occupations List is Ireland's official register of occupations in critical shortage. If your job offer matches a listed occupation and pays at least €40,904 per year (from 1 March 2026), you qualify for the Critical Skills Employment Permit — Ireland's fastest route to working, bringing your family, and reaching Stamp 4 residence after 21 months.
The list covers six broad sectors: ICT, engineering, healthcare, science, finance and construction. The most recent revision took effect on 22 May 2026, adding four new occupations plus four sub-entries under existing codes, and removing five occupations from the Ineligible List.
Occupations by sector
Your job title must map to an eligible SOC occupation code on the official list. These are the main groups employers in Ireland sponsor most often:

What changed on 22 May 2026
The May 2026 regulations made 32 amendments across Ireland's occupation lists. For Critical Skills candidates, these are the changes that matter:
Added to the Critical Skills Occupations List
- Optometrist / ophthalmic optician (community eye care)
- Intellectual property professionals
- Geospatial surveyor (also land surveyor, geomatics surveyor)
- Riggers within the games industry
Added as sub-entries under existing occupation codes
These are now explicitly named within codes already on the list, which removes the ambiguity that previously caused refusals for these job titles:
- Agronomist
- Meteorologist and operational forecaster
- Cardiac physiologist and respiratory physiologist
- Construction planner / scheduler
Removed from the Ineligible List
These occupations did not join the Critical Skills list, but became eligible for the General Employment Permit:
- Pharmaceutical technicians
- Dental technicians
- Printers
- Textile process operatives
- Forestry workers
Narrower carve-outs were also created for sea fishers, lineworkers, steel fixers, fish filleters and seafood operatives, though those broader categories stay ineligible outside the specified exceptions.
